Newbie Natural: How I Prepared for My BC (big chop)

So you've decided to cut your hair. The way I see it, it doesn't really matter how long after your last relaxer was - as long as you're ready. I originally planned to have about 3 inches or 6 months' worth of growth before chopping but I couldn't wait. And I'm glad I didn't because it gave me time to fight and bond with my hair and really go through all of the stages being natural comes with. From scratch. Here's what I was thinking a few days before I chopped off my relaxed hair.

Preparing for the BC

Last day with relaxed hair
I've made my decision. Friday 27th May is the day I'll BC.  Quite interesting how that date has turned out to be the day I BC as it'll be exactly 3 months after my last relaxer. I'm excited, nervous and anxious. I've even written a lil list for the things I'd like to get on Thursday to wear with my TWA like more hair flowers, cute and funky clips, scarves and headbands etc. I'm doing my research of TWA's to prepare myself. And yesterday before I twisted up my hair, I did a quick experiment with the lipsticks I have abandoned for awhile. I tied my hair into a mid ponytail to look as if I had a fro and tried on all my lipsticks. Turns out I have about 7 strong lippies (lipgloss excluded). I have light pink, barbie pink, fuschia purple, dark purple, bright red, dark red and neutral brown. And I loved all of them...well the barbie pink needs getting used to but the others were awesome. I should take pix with all these looks and post them up. But after doing those looks with my big earring, I think I could totally make something of my TWA. It's gonna be a great opportunity for me to have a new look and experiment with my make up, which I know I have a lot of. I also did some reading, and will continue to do reading on tips for funky TWA looks and there are quite a few out there. Sunshine on Natural Sunshine posted a helpful article on how to prepare for the BC. I know I'm making the right decision cos I'm so itchy to just do it. And usually when I'm about to do something, I get an itch and can't stop talking about it, thinking about it etc. I'm gonna cut it anyway and when I was washing and doing my hair it was breaking quite a bit so the sooner I do it, the better so it won't affect my natural hair.

Please make sure to read Sunshine's blog post on the 4 Things You MUST Do Before Your Big Chop. This post was my pre-big chop bible. She summarises the steps beautifully.

I've done it backwards (cos sometimes my mind just works that way) but now you've read and possibly experienced the moment before going natural, have a read of the Being Natural series, where I've documented each of my feelings and experiences in my first year of being fully natural.
